A 3g Tig welding certification test is vertical uphill and uses the same tig welding techniques that work for a 5g pipe joint.

I like to use a straight forward and back motion for the root pass because for me, it works better than walking the cup. You cant do that while walking the cup.

But you CAN do it using a tig finger.

Walking the up is a great technique but sometimes you just cant walk the cup because there is stuff in the way, or maybe the tube you are welding is only 1 inch diameter…walking the cup on 1 inch tube is hard. Using a tig finger to prop is easier.

This straight forward and back motion root pass technique is one of the most bulletproof ways to lay in a root pass. thats a fact.

In this video , I used a 1/8″ .125″ (3.2 mm) gap with a feather edge and a 1/8″ er70s2 rod….@ 100-110 amps for the root.

…and I increased the amperage each layer until I reached about 175 amps.

I used an air cooled 26 torch with a #6 cup ( a #7 or 8 cup would have been better after the root).

After the root pass, I walked the cup here and there….and I used the Tig finger too.

pay attention to the stops and starts.

Most text books will tell you to feather the tack welds with a grinder,

I didnt use a grinder at all. An old hand taught me how to tie in without using a grinder and I never went back.

I am for using whatever technique works for you….whether that means walking the cup… or using a tig finger….or propping your tig glove directly on the metal while your fingers melt.

I show both techniques.. walking the cup and not…and I spent lots of time making this video for you. About 20 hours total…and for you , once again, its free.

Now you can decide if it makes sense for you to try a Tig finger. IF not, no problem. We’re still Buds.

I am just happy for you to stick around a while and give me some feedback.

  1. Same here Jody, no cursor to start the video. I’m using Google Chrome. Most of your vids play but this one and a couple more I’ve noticed don’t do anything when the cursor runs on them.

  2. Hi Jody, Maybe its just me, but I don’t get any arrow or button to start the video. Thats happened the last three you sent.

    • Ron-

So sorry for your troubles. There’s no play button on the bottom of the videos, either? (and if you don’t mind me asking, what browser are you using?)

A few people do have problems here and there, but it’s usually something a browser update or a new browser altogether can fix.

      Best, Jody
