Mig Welding Aluminum & The PowerMig 350mp – Part 2

Mig Welding Aluminum

This is Part 2 and it is welding the top half of this heavy duty aluminum fixture.

I am not exactly sure what it does or why it was designed out of aluminum, but it obviously holds some large round part that needs to raise up and down and spin.

Sometimes it’s good to not to know everything.

After battling through the distortion issues in Part 1, it is time to put together the top portion of this fixture.

I am learning the settings on the powermig 350mp by trial and error, and the second fixture went better than the first. That is the way of it. Whenever I have several parts to weld, I always get better at it on the last one.

Anyway, some of the settings on the powermig 350 that help on mig welding aluminum are:

  • Pre and Post flow… even though not really 100% necessary, having about half a second of pre and post flow does help on starts and restarts.
  • Run in is adjustable too and that helps with stubbing on starts.
  • The start setting is really useful because it helps overcome the thermal conductivity issue with mig welding aluminum where you get cold starts with lack of fusion.
  • Crater fill is another very useful setting that really helps prevent crater cracks. You can set crater fill to fill just enough to prevent a crack, or enough to completely fill any crater.

There are lots of freakin’ knobs and settings. I am having a good time learning about them all.

  3. Ordered an Everlast 256pp on Wednesday, Thanks for demonstrating it on your site. I was leaning toward the entry level Miller but I would have been very disapionted with the torch. Your tips, demonstrations and review of the features for the Everlast were very informative. I feel I have learned more about Tig welding since I have watched some of your videos. I placed an order for a T-shirt & fingers, and just wanted to say thanks for the videos and tips. I’ll be watching more.

  4. Great stuff………..thanks for all you do……!!!!
