Tigging Stainless Shafts

5 stainless steel shafts got gouged on the CNC lathe.

Sometimes you weld 2 pieces of metal together, but sometimes welding means putting back metal that was miscut, worn, misdrilled, dented, or whatever.

Most of the repairs were easy… just time consuming… but one of them required a dial indicator and some good ole dry washing and speed cooling with an air nozzle. For a minute, I was worried. But in the end the shaft was plenty straight enough for final machining.

  1. Jody can you help me to know how to set up a trailblazer 302 to weld aluminum

  2. Hi Jody
I really appreciate having your weekly videos sent to my in box each week. As a ASME welder/ASNT level II RT, for the last 34 years you can never stop learning and your videos are a great way to do just that. Thanks for sharing all your wisdom with all the welders of this world.
    Cheers Mike

  3. Another great video! I’ve learned so much from watching your detailed close up views that I’m starting to get to be a pretty good welder.
Just got the 2012 season on DVD and went through most of it even though I don’t do much stick, just TIG and MIG.
It’s hard to beat, I get a great welding teacher with a dry sense of humor. Sometimes you make me laugh so loud I have to go back and review the lesson to hear the details I missed.
    Best,
    Rob

  4. Your videos are such a wealth of knowledge. Thanks for the effort it is appreciated. I was also wondering if the “clear welding helmets” will be on sale soon? LOL.

  5. Hi Jody !

I just want to thank you for all the effort you put into your videos and other information on your web site. I was a full-time welder back in the 1970’s (construction, shipyard and job shops), and really loved it. I ended up changing careers and have been computer programming for the last 30 years.

I still love welding, and continue to weld on many small projects around the house, and repair/fabrication work for others. I look forward to your videos every week, and learn a lot from all of them. Because of one of your videos, I recently added a scratch-start TIG setup to my little Hobart AC/DC arc welder, and it has been great to use it on Stainless Steel and Silicon Bronze has been a real kick.

Thanks again, you are a real contributor, many people really appreciate your efforts – I have purchased several TIG fingers, and will be purchasing videos – take care.

  6. What is the best way to tig an inside corner joint of a drip pan. I had a hard time and also found that mig wire did better than 1/16 rod on 18 gauge stainless.

  7. I really love you videos! You are a great teacher and you inspire me to learn more and more!
By the way, I have bought a couple of Tig Finger a couple of weeks ago and I just used it for the first time last weekend.
WoW! What a difference it makes, it reall yprotecd from the heat and it’s much easier when you can prop on somethng!

  9. I just want to tell you that I truly enjoy and appreciate your weekly videos. You are a master at your trade and a great instructor. I will be using your videos (I have purchased all of them) to teach my home-schooled son how to improve his welding. He started welding at age 12 and is now 15. Thank you for all your shared knowledge. I hope this becomes lucrative for you and that you continue to enjoy doing it.
