Tig Welding Aluminum in 3G Position

Tig Welding Aluminum 3G

This Weekly Video is about tig welding aluminum in 3g.

3g indicates a vertical groove weld, aka butt weld.

The 3 stands for vertical and the g stands for groove weld.

Here’s how it goes: 1g is flat, 2g is horizontal, 3g is vertical, and 4g is overhead.

I welded the top half first… then the bottom half. For a very long joint, sometimes using a backstep method works well to prevent distortion.

If I had welded the whole thing in one run without stopping, the heat would build up to the point that the last inch would run like water and be out of control.

  1. Hi, I wondered whether you had any tips on Aluminum vertical mig welding,
Since sometimes I get offered jobs that require a welding test for this.
Hope to hear from you soon.

  3. Jody, I was wondering if you have done any videos or plan to for open root 3g? Today I had a job interview for a company called Air Products as well as a weld “assessment”. The test was 1/2 inch aluminum plate with backing strip all stringers. I have never done aluminum before besides just stacking dimes on some scrap when I was in school. It came out descent and I was pretty happy about it seeing I have no experience. I would like to see how you would do it. Thanks Jody!
