AC Frequency Settings: TIG Welding Aluminum

I’m TIG welding aluminum today, and I’m comparing AC frequency. I’m gonna compare 50 hertz to 250 hertz. I’ve got some aluminum tubing, some eight-inch aluminum tubing, O-70 wall. It’s a bit less, a little bit less than two millimeters thick. I’m gonna set it up on a positioner and I’m gonna compare penetration, same amperage, 50 hertz, 250 hertz. Let’s do it. read more

Razor Blade Challenge – Welding Razor Blades

So there’s this thing that’s been going around Instagram for quite a while now. It’s called the razor blade challenge (#razorbladechallenge). And basically, normally it’s welding, most often it’s welding box cutter blades – literally welding razor blades. They’re a little bit easier to manage than the single-edge or even double-edge, really thin razor blades. But it’s all good practice. It’s not just a parlor trick. It’s not just showing off. It’s really good practice. read more

Welding Aluminum: MIG Spool Gun vs TIG

Hey. Jody here, with WeldingTipsandTricks.com. Last week’s video was part one of the aluminum awning build. We put together a lot of the structure in JD’s shop, all TIG welding with a 200 amp machine, full pedal for most of the welding. A lot of people ask why we didn’t use a spool gun. Why we didn’t MIG weld it. We certainly could have. Part two’s not ready yet. I want to wait until all the shots are finalized and the awning is hung in place where you can see the finished product. read more

How to TIG Weld Aluminum: Part 3 – AC Frequency Settings

Hey, Jody here with WeldingTipsandTricks.com. Today is Part Three of a how to tig weld aluminum series. In Part One, I asked for questions and comments. One of the most frequently asked questions was, “What about AC frequency? Can you explain where you would want to use certain frequency settings?” A lot of newer tig inverters have this setting. Today I’m going to take a look at that, and try to answer some of the questions that came in on AC frequency settings, where do you use a low frequency, where do you use a higher frequency setting, and what’s a good all around setting that will work for most everything. Let’s do it. read more
