Just wanted to give a plug for SafetyGlassesUSA.com. A Veteran Owned Small Business. I exchanged emails with Heather. She was so nice, & her recommendations for grinding & Oxy cutting goggles which meet Aus/NZ ballistic standards were Priceless. General MacArthur stood at Terowie Train Station in the Mid North of South Australia & said “We Shall Return”. I will return to Safety Glasses USA. Thanks Mate. Dan.
How’s it going? Just wanted to give my 5 cents worth. 7024, or 4824 in Australia. Iron Powder coated down had rods are hit or miss. I had problems with ESAB brand rods. Not smooth to use, hard to restart. Austarc by W.I.A (welding industries of Australia) are as smooth as silk. Glass appearance & the slag curls up from the fillet. It scraps right of with a cold chisel. These rods make average Welders look good. A machined Finish. W.I.A is part of the Miller/Hobart I.T.W group. Weldwell from NZ is also part of this. I have purchased twice from J.F.Lincoln Foundation now. I didn’t buy Metals & How to Weld them. I will next time. A New Approach to Industrial Economics by Jim Lincoln is a book worth reading. I still use a Lincoln Idealarc. This grey machine is 50 years old & has never missed a beat. I cool the stinger/Electrode holder by dunking it in a bucket of water.( Poor Mans Watercooling) Continually winding from 90-230 amps will give you a shoulder like a rock. . Keep up the good work. Thanks Mate. Dan.
What I meant was Austarc 7018 or 4818 as we say & miller or Hobart may be the same rod? . We don’t have miller or Hobart rods in Australia. But being the same company, maybe the same rods?
I will contact Hobart here in the States and inquire about Rod Manufacturing for ITW companies.
I have had good experience with ESAB products.
Lincoln 7018 is the tried and true here in the USA
Always interested in different ideas

PS: Go see INTERSTELLAR
I welded tons of steel for that movie.
71-_M “Dual Shield” by Lincoln .045 dia.
Flux core wire with gas cover.
Runs at 26 + volts very hot and structural certified
Also used a Flux wire by Lincoln “232” .068 dia.
Structural steel out doors (no gas cover)
AWS E71-8 is the designation
Very Very hot wire with fast freeze slag.
It looks like Lincoln manufacture in Sydney. I don’t have a lot of experience with Lincoln consumables. Only older machines like the Idealarc & TransMig, some fabricators still use these. & 170amp inverter I bought a 5kg box of 7018 Excalabur from a USA seller WeldFabulous on eBay. Esab is our main consumables. E-70s of the top of my head? I would have to refere to the box at work tomorrow. It is not copper coated. 0.9mm & 1.2mm gas shielded solid wire. You might know more about Esab classifications? I’m a boilermaker/welder. I still use 4311/6011 & 4818 rods. W.I.A machines are being rebranded by Miller. I found out about I.T.W from enquiries at Hobart Brothers & Miller. They directed me back to W.I.A. C.I.G (commonwealth Inert Gas) (formally EMF) & B.O.C(Brittish Oxygen Company) are two other welding companies in Australia selling machines & consumables. Lincoln diesel welders are our main site welders. Do you have experience with outer shield? I don’t know much about using mig outside.

I will check out this Lincoln site later in the day. It’s 5:18am in Adelaide.. I’m having a cup of tea & toast with Vegemite & tomato. I’m working 12 hr days at the moment. I will check the wire classifications & let you know what we are using. For years we used only what sales reps wanted to sell. I have been doing my own searches online. The best information I have been getting is from USA. Have a good day. Thanks Mate.
These arethe Esab wires we are using at work. 1.2mm Gas shielded fluxcore E71T-1c 16kg spool.
0.9mm gas shielded solid wire. ER70S-6 12.5kg spool.
1.2mm E70S-6 18kg spool.
They are not copper coated. They are stainless steel like coating. Made in Poland.
I’m not sure why they are a silver coating instead of copper? Maybe cheaper?
I checked up Lincoln Outer Shield. It is made in Sydney.
I also sent a query to Weldwell in NZ. They manufacture Austarc electrodes for W.I.A.
It was good to know welding rods & wires are still made in My region. I thought Australia only manufactured hamburgers & beer these days. Everything seems to come from China now.
I have a small query why don’t your videos have sound on my computer all other movies Etc play hope you can shed some light on the subject as they look very interesting ……Thanks Bazz

Good Morning 10:56 AM Los Angeles
Must do own research
Knowledge is power
Los Angeles = earthquakes = get the best electrodes/wires

I love the C-L-A-M-S acronym.
Good demo on the SMAW.
Great that it was not running well. Very instructive
My Lincoln books are like the “Old Testament” !!
I give away X-Mas gifts of the Big Lincoln Welding manual.
Read “SPARK” by Frank Koller (The story of Lincoln Welding Company) ( Amazon books)
I want one of those Book give aways – I do not have that volume yet.
I do not leave home with out my “Tig FIngers”
