Quick Summary for mig welding lap joints and tee joints uphill
KYSS…Keep your stickout short. Stickout is the amount of wire sticking out between the contact tip and the arc… If you aim for about 3/8″ (9mm) stickout, you will probably have more stickout than you think.
Use a technique that helps keep the arc on the leading edge of the puddle. Both techniques shown in this video help keep the arc where it needs to be to get adequate penetration.
Set the voltage and wire speed high enough to get penetration into the root of the joint…but not so high that you cant control convexity.
In this video 19 volts and 280 ipm of .030″ (.8mm) wire worked out ok.

Hoi Jody,
Me, from Belgium, again. I love wat you do, and was really waiting for this video and although I think that you made it yourself little bit easy, maybe with the camera involved or so. I think it is more difficult to keep your stickup right when you are welding an inside corner joint, and if want it really difficult try a but weld straight up. maybe you show us those two one time?
Keep up the good work
and thanks for everything so far

First, thank you for your videos. I have been watching them every week for about 3 years. They are great, practical, easy to understand and to the point!
A neighbor has brought to me a broken vise, cast steel. Is it possible to weld this, and if so, how would you do it? I have a Lincoln Precision Tig 225.
Thanks,
Bob

Hi Jody,
Thanks again for your videos they help alot of people. I am a Journeyman Millwright and decided back in 2005 to build an outdoor boiler to heat my house and shop with wood. Most of my welding experience at that time was stick welding pipe and structural steel and I wanted to speed up this build, so I bought a Miller 185 and went at it. I didnt like the apperance of the uphill welds,so I started downhilling them. I quickly learned lack of fusion is not a good trade off for good looks. All those leaks hurt the ego worst than anything, but as you know that just spurs a fire in you to figure out what your doing wrong and correct it. Hours of grinding and rewelding uphill and today I am heating with the same leak free boiler. I really appreciate the time you invest in everyone that takes the time to watch your videos. Regards, Steve
