Hello Jody, Great build. If I may make a few comments,
I think the 1/4″ on the hammer faces is too thin if you really hit something hard you may cave it in.
A friend and I made a dead blow using 2″pipe with 1″ thick ends turned to fit in the pipe. I bronzed one end before welding in the pipe. I use it to drive punches and steel stamps.
As for the blue oxide, I do this all the time, one needs to use a wax finish or a linseed oil/wax( like beeswax ) to keep it from rusting, apply the wax to the hot metal about 250 deg+ .
