This week’s video is about a tig welding repair on a stainless steel machined part.

What do you do when you are supposed to deliver parts on Monday, but on Saturday you accidentally machine a groove in one of the parts, and you don’t have enough 4″ stainless round stock to make another part?

Well, there is no way you are going to get 4″ stainless round stock on a weekend. And there is no way you are calling the customer once again to tell him the delivery will be delayed… AGAIN.

So just call the welder.

Jobs like this are common in machine shops. Stuff happens. Holes get misdrilled. Tool changers crash. Parts get gouged.

Good thing a lot of them can be repaired with weld. Not all of them… but a lot of them can be fixed just like you see in this weekly video.

This accident happened several steps away from final cuts, so any distortion from the weld can be machined and final finish and dimensions can be obtained as long as there are not pits or voids in the weld.

I used DCEN, 80-90 amps, 2% lanthanated 3/32″ (2.4mm) electrode, no pulse, #7 gas lens cup and stubby kit on a big #26 air cooled torch. 15 cfh argon flow, and 1/16″ (1.6mm) er308L filler rod

Work like this is actually a good way to start you own welding business. But you do need some experience and finesse so that the parts are in better shape when you finish than when you start.

Small machine shops often don’t have skilled tig welders.

It’s exactly how I got started doing my own thing in welding. By doing repair work for machine shops.

  1. Jody, first let me congratulate you on your superb series of welding videos. I really hit a homerun when I stumbled across it on YouTube!
I have two questions: 1. I have a friend who is a welder and he has been teaching. What I see him do and have yet to see you do, is after he grinds the tungsten tip, he taps it on a copper plate. This puts a little round ball on the end of the grind. Do you do this and edit it out. A video of this would be nice. 2. On this repair job, I was surprised to see you mill the part. Is that something required? I would have thought that the machinist would do that.
    Again,great stuff!!

HI;very good very good I make some bikes now and again.I would love to weld like you Mel

  3. Jody, could you talk about the torch angle (tungsten angle) and filler rod angle on this project. It is very difficult to tell what the angles are in relation to the piece in the videos.
