As of Feb 2012, the Boy Scouts of America have a new merit badge for welding.

and that is a good thing.

Welding is something that not just everybody gets exposed to. Case in point… I had never welded for even a minute when I started welding school at 19. Never seen it done, never had a welding helmet on my head, never knew the first thing about it.

After teaching welding for years, I noticed something. Men who grew up on farms generally had a head start over others when it came to learning how to weld.

Reason? All of them had to weld stuff growing up. It was a necessity. When something breaks on a farm, it has to get fixed… and sometimes it has to get fixed rather quickly or there is serious price to pay.

I can’t think of a more useful skill to learn for boy scouts. That’s why I am glad to help in making a video to help scouts and counselors to achieve the merit badge for welding.

To achieve the welding merit badge, a scout can choose from stick welding, mig welding, flux core welding, or even gas welding.

This video only addresses stick welding also known as shielded metal arc welding.

But more videos are on the way to help with mig and flux core, because I figure 115 volt mig and flux core machines will be very common machines available.

  1. As always… thanks ..

  2. Hi Jody,
Thanks again for your videos, just got your TIG finger, great!
When I watch you TIG videos I always feel like I’m missing something…. your foot control. I’d love to see your foot action as you weld. Could you split the screen or show just your foot and explain at what point in the weld you are as your foot changes the amperage?
