Old School Scratch Start Tig… With a Twist.

Scratch Start Tig

This weekly video is about a simple scratch start tig setup along with a diy foot switch. The rectifier seems to put out a very wavy DC current. I kinda like it. It’s like high speed pulse.

What kind of stuff have you welded with a simple scratch start rig?

  1. If you add capacitors to the DC side of the rectifier they will smooth the current significantly. Will make the start a bit hotter just for an instant too.

    20,000 – 30,000 uFd 50 VDC will work

Get one off of eBay and wire it in parallel cap + to rectifier + and cap – to rectifier –

You can place several lower uFd caps in parallel to add up to 30K or so. Just make sure all of the caps have voltage ratings of at least 50 working volts.

    About Capacitors:
Voltage rating is important you can go higher, just not lower.
Micro Farad (uFd) rating, if you go much higher that 30K or so, they will blow the tip of your tungsten off when scratching the tip.

  2. jodi I,ll like u to give a demo on the propper /or best way to hold the tig torch

  4. Hey, great piece of equipment! I’ve got a tomb stone Lincoln like that. I think I’ll make one too. Question about your air cooled torch. I told my buddy about the CK flexlock. He says ,”Yea, they’re great but not if you are welding 3/4″alu plate all the time.” Is an air cooled torch as durable as a water cooled? Thanks for all the information. D.

  5. Keep up the good work
